I’ve had two productive weekends in a row. Haven’t been that productive in a long time. With these two weekends I did some refinishing on my truck. I took a wire wheel and sandpaper to the bed then hit it with a coat of primer. The before and after are below.

Before:

After:

I am not 100% pleased with the bed, but the goal was to get rid of and stop the rust. Pro tip, an 8 foot bed takes way more than two cans to paint. I was foolish to think I could do it with only two cans.

I spruced up the grill and painted the headlight surrounds as well because they did not match which irked me a bit. Now they match and that makes me happy even if I don’t like how it looks compared to how to passenger shroud looked before.

After:

Hopefully I can continue to have dry and productive weekends as there is so much more to do and so little time to do it.

Question: I have read that leaving primer can cause/not prevent rust since it is porous and absorbs water. Is this true or am I fine leaving the bed just primered for a while(aka at least a year)?

Have that about a roll on or spray in textured bed liner?

I plan to get a spay on, but I first have to fix the holes near the cab. One in particular is too big for spray on to cover up/ fill in.

Thanks! I love patina, but I don’t love that someone ordered the wrong bezel who knows how many years ago and called it good.

any plans on getting some Cragars , a lift, big tires, a glasspack (or two) and a roll bar? because if I had your truck that’s what i’d be doing!

Looks great BTW! nice clean-up on the bed and grill!

Of course. Though only a slight lift or a leveling kit since it’s rwd. Also holding off on an exhaust as I am planning to drop in a new engine next year hopefully.

I would love drop in one of those, but it would take a lot more modifications than just dropping a magnum 390. I also want more power than that haha

Primer and Bondo are both porous and suck up water.

I parked my car outside for a while after I primed it before I painted it.

Now only 5 years later, all of the bondo in the rear quarters is blistering.

I’d advise getting some truck bed liner and painting it because that stuff is tought as hell and protects against rust.

Thanks for the info. The plan is to get it bed lined soon, just have to repair a few holes the came up when I sanded the rust away.
